Local farmers and Agriculture students took part in a specialized “Training on Community Rice-Based Mushroom Production” conducted by Cagayan State University Solana-Lara Campus on September 16, 2025, at the Campus Kaunlaran Gymnasium.
The activity aimed to equip participants with practical knowledge and techniques in sustainable mushroom cultivation, from substrate preparation to inoculation, incubation, fruiting, and harvesting.
Campus Extension Coordinator and Project Leader Mr. Jake P. Abedes opened the technical sessions with a lecture on the scientific and community-based rationale of mushroom farming. “This training is designed to help our farmers turn agricultural waste into a viable source of food and income,” Abedes said. “It is part of our commitment to expand livelihood opportunities in our partner communities.”
Agriculture faculty member Romar D. Asuncion followed with a detailed discussion on substrate preparation, spawn procurement, and proper inoculation techniques.
The hands-on component was led by Dr. Michael M. Uy, Dean of the College of Agriculture and a seasoned mushroom grower. Dr. Uy guided participants through each production step and emphasized the livelihood potential of the practice. “Mushroom production is a simple yet promising venture,” he said. “With the right skills, our farmers can create sustainable income while practicing an environmentally friendly approach to agriculture.”
The training forms part of CSU Solana-Lara’s continuing extension initiatives aimed at supporting community-based enterprises and promoting sustainable agricultural practices across the municipality.
